When news broke that a group of gunmen had taken over the upscale Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, NBC’s Ron Allen dispatched to the scene to report live as the story unfolded.

For four harrowing days, Allen brought us breaking news, personal accounts, interviews with survivors and stories of heroism. Now that the shooting has stopped, there is a vastly different story to report. That is the story of how Kenya will move forward following such a traumatic act of terrorism that claimed the lives of 61 civilians and wounded 175 people, many of them from nations other than Kenya.

TheGrio.com asked Allen to summarize the way forward. We wanted to know how the people of Kenya are coping in the aftermath of the attack. The violence was specifically aimed at a location where foreign nationals and ex-patriots frequented. Has this impacted their expectations of safety?

Acts of terrorism such as what Ron just witnessed  and reported on, can have the effect of bonding and consolidating a nation. Ron talks to us about Kenya’s efforts towards healing and the resolve of African nations on the whole as they move toward safety and prosperity despite such determined adversaries.
