Alicia Keys is in 'state of disbelief' over government shutdown

theGRIO REPORT - In an interview with theGrio, singer/actress Alicia Keys discusses the government shut down and expresses support for 'Obamacare'...

Singer/actress Alicia Keys is a ‘state of disbelief’ over the current U.S. government shutdown.

The 32-year-old Grammy Award winner expressed her support for the Affordable Healthcare Act, a.k.a. ‘Obamacare’ during an interview with theGrio’s Chris Witherspoon, and discussed our nation’s current political stalemate.

“To be honest the way that I feel is like a state of disbelief. I just don’t understand how… I just don’t get it,” Alicia said. “What I don’t get is how we get to place of not supporting something that’s really going to empower people to take care of themselves just that much more. If we’re allowed to be empowered and if we’re allowed to have access to healthcare, that only benefits the country. That only benefits the way we are able to be healthier people, stronger people… really overall more complete human beings. So I just don’t understand why we even get to these places, why we’re even talking about this stuff.”

In July President Obama enlisted the help of celebrities including Amy Poehler, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Oprah Winfrey to promote heath care.

The president attended a private White House meeting Monday with celebrities including singer Jennifer Hudson and actors Amy Poehler, Michael Cera, and also representatives for Oprah Winfrey, Alicia Keys and Bon Jovi.

Tuesday, Hudson teamed up with the humor site Funny or Die,  releasing a spoof video of Kerry Washington‘s hit ABC series, Scandal, in order to get the word out about the launch of the Affordable Care Act.

Keys is currently promoting The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, a film which she is executive producing.
