Two Florida residents were awarded with the Citizen Hero Award last week after they helped rescue a woman from her burning home in September.

Diane Marshall was asleep inside her apartment when neighbor Susan Laney and her friend Tommy Barber smelled the smoke and came to the rescue.

Barber, who is legally blind, entered the burning home with a fire extinguisher. Together, he and Laney saved Marshall from the flames.

“I could have been dead in a second,” Marshall told the local news station WPBF 25 News.

The fire left extreme damage to the apartment after flames were ignited from the kitchen and quickly engulfed the space.

Laney and Barber were nominated by the local fire district lieutenant for the award. They were lauded for the bravery and courage they showed, especially considering Barber’s disability.

Barber told WPBF: “Whatever the disability may be, just give it your best, and don’t give up.”
