Last night NBC pulled of a feat that hasn’t been attempted on a major TV network in more than 50 years — a live broadcast of a Broadway musical.

Carrie Underwood headlined The Sound of Music: Live on NBC, along with fellow cast members Laura Benati, Elsa Shrader and Stephen Moyer.

However today TV and Broadway critics aren’t buzzing about Underwood, but rather singing the praises of Broadway vet Audra McDonald who starred as Mother Superior, a supporting character in the show.

Her rendition of “Climb Every Mountain,” was exquisite, and set Twitter ablaze with viewer reactions to McDonald’s flawless performance.

According to Huffington Post writer Peter Mac, “the reason to see this adaptation when it becomes available on December 17, 2013 nationwide and by pre-order now on Amazon can be summed up in two words: Audra McDonald.”

What do you think of McDonald’s performance?
