ATLANTA – Gabrielle Union is on a grueling schedule promoting her forthcoming new series Being Mary Jane, which debuts on BET Networks early next year on January 7.

On Wednesday, Union, 41, was at midtown Atlanta’s W Hotel for a sneak preview celebration of the upcoming season, in the midst of handpicked guests.

Being Mary Janewhich was shot in Atlanta, revolves around the life of successful cable news anchor, Mary Jane Paul (played by Union). She is a successful modern woman trying to balance love, life, career and family.

BET introduced its audience to the project on July 2 with an original movie of the same name. More than 4 million viewers tuned in for the premiere. The one-hour scripted drama served as a back-door pilot into the series, consisting of eight one-hour episodes.

Speaking to theGrio at the intimate gathering, Union, dressed in a sleek black dress and towering heels, said, “It’s a brutally honest, authentic depiction of a single working woman trying to have it all.”

BET’s first original drama series is the brainchild of the successful husband and wife team Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil. Their company Akil Productions has secured a multi-year development deal with BET Networks, following the success of The Game.

Union is accompanied by veteran actors Richard Roundtree and Margaret Avery and a cast that includes Omari Hardwick and Lisa Vidal.
