Amid all the speculation about who would replace David Letterman in his Late Night chair at CBS, comedian Tracy Morgan threw his hat in the ring.

The former 30 Rock star explained on The Today Show that his old SNL colleague and current Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon “needs some competition.”

The comedian, who is promoting his voice role in the animated kids’ movie Rio 2, joked that his backing band “would be different every night. It might be Drake one night, it might be Sly and the Family Stone [the next].”

Turns out Morgan won’t get the chance. CBS has announced that Comedy Central star Stephen Colbert will take over the reins of Letterman’s show in 2015.

Watch Morgan’s appearance on Today and let us know if you think he’d make a good late-night host.
