Kelly Price: Critics said I was 'too big' to make it

Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Kelly Price is at a point in her career where she’s feeling reflective.

Her sixth album, Sing Pray Love, Vol 1: Sing, is scheduled for release later this year. The album is a play on the Julia Roberts movie Eat, Pray, Love, where Roberts’ character was trying to find herself after a divorce. Price is using that same approach with her latest project.

Price has been active in the music industry since 1998.  Her resume of writing credits and songs where she is featured as a guest vocalist is extensive.

Even with the success of her debut single “Friend Of Mine,” critics in the industry made her feel like her size and voice were too large for the mainstream.

“Everything was too big,” Price said about her start in the music industry. “It took a lot for me to overcome that.”

Detractors aside, her fellow singer Whitney Houston and another music legend gave her a monumental co-sign.

“When Ron Isley says you can sing, you’re in a pretty good place,” Price said.
