Ray Rice jerseys returned en masse

Up to 7,000 Baltimore Ravens fans have turned in Ray Rice jerseys for another player's number.

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

The AP is reporting that up to 7,000 Baltimore Ravens fans have turned in Ray Rice jerseys for another player’s number. The Ravens swapped out over 5,500 jerseys during a two-day event and had to give out around 2400 vouchers for new jerseys when they ship.

Kevin Bryne, spokesman for the Ravens, had this to say about the fate of the old jerseys:

The NFL licensed jerseys are not recyclable because of certain materials in parts of the jersey, so what we’re going to do is offer them to companies who deal in scrap. We’re not getting paid for it. We’ll just give it to them, and they can do with it as they please.

The last two weeks have been a PR nightmare for not only for the Ravens but for the NFL with Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, Jonathan Dwyer, and Greg Hardy all embroiled in some type of domestic abuse scandal. The league has been reeling from the scandals, and now sponsors are starting to act.

Radison hotels suspended their deal with the Minnesota Vikings, Adrian Peterson’s team. Budweiser, the king of beer sponsors, criticized the NFL’s handling of the recent events but fell short of acting. And Procter & Gamble has canceled its October breast cancer awareness promotion.
