Lil John encourages young voters to ‘Turn Out’ in new song for Rock the Vote

A just-released star-studded video set to a remix of Lil John’s “Turn Down For What”—retitled “Turn Out For What”—encourages younger voters to turn out for the upcoming midterm elections.
The rapper and a number of performers teamed up with non-profit organization Rock the Vote to produce the YouTube video.
The three-and-a-half minute clip starts out with Lil John speaking on the phone, telling the caller that he’ll swing by and hang out later, after he gets done voting in the midterm elections. The caller is then revealed to be Whoopi Goldberg, who plays Lil John’s “auntie” in the video. It then cuts to Lil John having a conversation with Girls star Lena Dunham, who’s in one of the voting booths with her celebrity trainer.
The remixed song stars about at about 1:30 through the video, with the words “Rock the vote, rock, rock the vote” kicking off the track. It features a series of celebrities saying that they’re turning out for a variety of causes. EJ Johnson, Lena Dunham, Fred Armisen, Natasha Lyonne and Whoopi Goldberg all appear in the clip.
As for what Lil Jon himself is turning out for, the rapper announces towards the end of the video that he’s turning out for the “legalization of marijuana.”
The video can be found on Rock the Vote’s official YouTube channel. Released on October 7, the video already has over half a million views. The organization has encouraged viewers to use the “#turnoutforwhat” hashtag on Twitter to spread the message to get out and vote.
According to an article on The Atlantic, young voters—who are the main target of Rock the Vote—who saw the organization’s advertising had a 2.7 percent increase in voter turnout come election time.
Midterm elections are scheduled for Tuesday, November 4.
