Five people, including two children, died in a DC area car accident last week.
The accident occurred when a Mercedes struck an Acura at a busy intersection, near Oxon Hill, Maryland.
Mark Brady, the Prince George’s County fire spokesman, also wrote in a tweet that, “In my nearly 40 years of PGFD service, the Oxon Hill crash that claimed five lives last night ranks as one of the worst.”
Two children and three adults were killed in the two-car crash. A witness of the crash, local resident of Oxen Hill William Key, said that “It was too hard. My wife heard it at home two blocks away.”
The Mercedes was speeding and went through a red light, “narrowly missing a woman and child,” before slamming into the back of the Acura, according to the Washington Post.
While police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash, no criminal charges have been filed as of yet. Police have indicated that “speed and weather” may have been prime contributing factors.
The crash claimed the lives of sisters Tameika Curtis, 35, and Typhani Wilkerson, 32. Their cousins Haddah Ba, 13, and Hassan Boykin, 1, were also killed. One passenger in the other vehicle, Dominique Green, 21, also died.
The driver of the Acura survived the crash with critical injuries; the driver and one passenger in the Mercedes also survived. Witnesses reported seeing the driver of the Acura crawling away from the burning vehicles, dragging their elbows along the ground.
Curtis and Wilkerson both leave behind children, according to a WUSA9 report. The family has started a funeral fund for the victims.
