Ava DuVernay, whose recent directorial work on the Civil Rights film Selma propelled her to the national stage, is reportedly taking on a new project.
The new film, which Vulture describes as “a sweeping love story and complex murder mystery,” will center around Hurricane Katrina.
Selma’s David Oyelowo may also co-produce and star. Participant Media’s Jonathan King will serve as one of the film’s executive producers. King told Variety:
Hurricane Katrina is one of the most important social and environmental stories of our time. Ava DuVernay has shown herself to be highly skilled at bringing intimacy and contemporary urgency to epic events. We have been looking for the right way to get back in business with Ava, and with David Oyelowo, and are proud to reteam with them on her original idea, which we believe will be a powerful film.
