Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Can’t beat ’em? Join ’em.

Can’t get married? Marry yourself.

That’s exactly what Yasmin Eleby did earlier this month in Houston. Eleby married herself in a “lavish ceremony with ten bridesmaids in attendance, plus family and other guests,” according to the Houston Chronicle.

The event was held at the Houston Museum of African-American Culture. The “marriage,” although it is not legal to marry yourself, was performed by Eleby’s sister, who also happens to be a minister.

The museum’s CEO, John Guess Jr., told the Chronicle’s Craig Hlavaty the ceremony was “in line with forward thinking normally found” at his complex.

“Once she hit 40 she figured if she didn’t find someone who loved her as much as she did, she would marry herself,” he said.

Eleby writes on her Facebook page that she’s been “overwhelmed” by the love and support she’s received since the ceremony.

Eleby says her mother “walked/danced” her down the aisle.

Congratulations to the newlywed.
