Azealia Banks is stirring up controversy on social media once again. But this time, it has nothing to do with Iggy Azalea, at least not directly.

This week, the rapper received backlash on Instagram for posting a pic of herself with white makeup on captioned  “#whiteface,” a spin off on the racially divisive practice of white entertainers wearing “blackface.” Despite her choice of words, the white powder wasn’t a political statement but instead special effects makeup to turn her into an ice princess for a new music video.

This could have quickly been cleared up as a misunderstanding. However, when Banks took to Twitter to set things straight, she just ended up offending people even more.

Banks tweeted a Wikipedia link that explains “misogynoir” is a term coined by gay black feminist scholar Moya Bailey. It refers to anti-black misogyny, where race and gender together are factors in the hatred of black women.

Banks then started venting about her thoughts concerning the “gay media.”
