Today marks the third anniversary of the shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.

Some have said Martin’s death has set off a “new generation” of black activism, calling for more accountability from police, increased political engagement in communities of color and overall recognition of black lives.

Recently, Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, met up with Myrlie Evers-Williams for a special video interview series for theGrio.com and CNN.

In 1963, Evers’ husband Medgar was fatally shot in the driveway of his home. His death ultimately served as a pivotal civil rights spark in the push for equality and justice for African-Americans.

The two women discussed their shared struggle and how their lives changed forever.
