Kobe Bryant chokes up, blames himself for wife's miscarriage during rape trial

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

In footage from the new documentary “Kobe Bryant’s Muse,” which premiered on Showtime this Saturday, a teary Kobe Bryant called his wife’s miscarriage “something I gotta carry forever” and admitted that he felt responsible for the loss.

The Lakers star said that the miscarriage took place after the rape case brought against him in 2004. He had been arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a Colorado resort hotel employee in 2003, but charges were dropped in September when the hotel employee chose not to testify. Bryant’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, suffered a miscarriage in early 2005.

“The reality is it happened because of me. That’s something I have to deal with,” he said.

“We were expecting…and um…expecting our second child during that time…and there was just so much stress, she actually, she actually miscarried,” Bryant said.

“It’s something…I have a real hard time dealing with that ’cause I felt like it was just my fault,” Bryant said.

“We should be building our family,” he continued. “But because of my mistake, because of this tough year, we lost a baby.”

The Bryants have two daughters, but it’s obvious that the absence of a third still hits hard for the Lakers star and his family.
