At this point, it is an indisputable fact that Fox’s Empire is a ratings goldmine, with audiences tuning in at record numbers to revel in the vainglorious splendor of the Lyons family.
Classical literature fans quickly noticed that the story is based (loosely) on Shakespeare’s King Lear. But co-creator Lee Daniels has also specifically cited ABC’s iconic, Aaron Spelling–produced Dynasty as an inspiration for his indulgent execution of the narrative.
This week, that Dynasty comparison led the brilliant folks over at Vulture to give this show the one thing it’s missing: an epic, soap opera-esque opening credits sequence.
All the iconic nighttime melodramas of yesteryear have had one, so it’s only fitting that Lucious, Cookie and the rest of the gang be immortalized in the same way.
