ZION, Ill. (AP) — Police in the Chicago suburb of Zion say the teenager killed by an officer over the weekend was involved in an illegal gun sale before the shooting.

The Lake County coroner revealed Monday that 17-year-old Justus Howell was shot twice in the back Saturday afternoon.

Police say officers responding to a call about an altercation chased a male who ran from the scene. They say that after the teen was shot, officers recovered a handgun.

In a statement late Monday, Zion police said 18-year-old Tramond Peet was going to sell the gun to the Howell, when Howell tried to steal it. Peet told investigators that the gun discharged during an ensuing struggle. He said he let go of the gun when he heard police cars.
