Dominick Davis is getting his hair cut for the first time in a decade in an attempt to “improve his image.”

Davis, who recently finished serving six years in prison, said that his dreadlocks were becoming an issue   and impacting how others perceived him.

He claimed that people saw the dreadlocks and were already making assumptions about him.

“It’s time for a change, because enough is enough,” he told ActionNewsJax.

“People feel like everyone that has dreads are bad people or they’re criminals,” Davis said.

Davis, 41, pointed out the recent crimes in Jacksonville that have been associated with the image of dreadlocks, especially on the news.

“You turn on the TV and if they have a suspect, the description is a person with dreads,” Davis said. “You absolutely have to dress. You can’t go on an interview with jeans, T-shirt. You’re basically selling yourself.”

The organization “Save Our Sons” is working to address stereotypes and to improve images, and Davis believes that cutting his hair will help to get rid of some of the prejudices holding him back. He hopes that youth in his community will follow his lead.
