A 25-year-old Kentucky man was shot by deputies following a wild car chase.
Monday, Nelson County Sheriff Ed Mattingly held a press conference to about the incident and he expressed his “relief” that the shooting victim was white.
The sheriff believed that because the shooting victim was not black, there would not be unrest.
“We are glad that he is white, and we shouldn’t have to be worried about that,” Sheriff Ed Mattingly said. “We do not want any backlash or violence in this community because people have been misinformed.”

According to Bardstown Police Chief Rick McCubbin, officers first clashed with John Kennedy Fenwick when they tried to pull him over in a truck Fenwick allegedly stole from a dealership. Fenwick backed his truck into a patrol car and sped away. He allegedly hit a second patrol car that burst into flames because of the hit.
When a second deputy caught up with Fenwick, the deputy, Bryan Voils, ordered Fenwick to get out of the car, drawing his weapon. However, Fenwick tried to disarm Voils, which prompted the shooting.
In order to keep the investigation of the incident transparent, Mattingly and McCubbin have turned things over to the state police.
“This is a terrible thing that’s happened, but it’s part of the job,” Mattingly said.
