theGRIO REPORT - Mount Zion AME Church in Greeleyville, South Carolina is on fire Tuesday night, 20 years after it was burned to the ground by the KKK.
Mount Zion AME Church in Greeleyville, South Carolina, is on fire Tuesday night, 20 years after it was burned to the ground by suspected KKK members.
According to WCIV, the flames broke through the roof as of 10:30 PM, and multiple fire departments were on scene to battle the blaze.
The Los Angeles Times featured Mount Zion AME Church just last week in an article about violence against black churches. The church was targeted and burned down by two white men with suspected KKK ties on June 20, 1995.
The church was rebuilt, and one year later, in 1996, President Bill Clinton spoke at the re-dedication.

This fire marks the seventh black church to catch fire in recent weeks.
Less than two weeks ago, 21-year-old Dylann Roof opened fire at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church, claiming the lives of nine parishioners attending bible study.
