Viral 'Mexican 4th of July' video turns the tables on cultural appropriation

theGrio REPORT - A hilarious video has taken a closer look at the way Americans celebrate holidays and has lambasted their misunderstanding of other nations' holidays, most notably Cinco de Mayo.

A hilarious new video asks, “What if Mexicans celebrated the 4th of July the way Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo?”

The skit takes a lighthearted but poignant look at the way Americans appropriate Mexican culture under the guise of celebration, while rewriting history in the process.

When Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo, it’s clear that many of us don’t actually understand what we’re doing.

Now, the comedic team at Flama has turned the tables this Independence Day, and are giving everyone a taste of their own medicine; complete with the misuse of “traditional” clothing and a shameless perpetuation of stereotypes.

One can’t help but wonder what a similar video about how this country appropriates black culture would look like.

Check out the clip above.
