A teen, who recently committed to Brigham Young University to play football, was shot in the arm on Sunday while playing basketball with some friends outside a middle school.

Charles West, 18, was treated for the gunshot wound at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas and was released on Monday morning.

Coppell Police Department Sgt. Sammy Lujan said before the arrest of the shooting suspect that investigators had not yet determined a motive for the shooting. As of Tuesday, no more information concerning a possible motive has been released.

The shooter has been identified, though his identity has not yet been released to the public. The shooter was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Monday afternoon. Police say they have to talk to more witnesses and gain more information before releasing a name and mug shot.

Because there is video of the incident, police say, they can more easily identify witnesses to talk to.

“The existence of the video helps us because we are able to visually see what happened. That’s rare, you often don’t get to see the actual shooting. So we’re able to see, we can identify witnesses,” said Lujan.
