Waitress fired after referring to black couple as 'black couple' on receipt

theGRIO REPORT -

A Missouri waitress has been fired after referring to an African-American couple as “black couple” on their receipt.

Customer Kimberli Wilson was upset and miffed as to why the words were printed on the receipt in the first place.

She told a St. Louis TV station she would never go back to the restaurant.

“Totally, totally just humiliated,” Wilson said of the experience. “I was frustrated, I was angry, I was thinking, ‘Really? Are we still doing this in 2015?'”

The owner, Patrick Hanon, was similarly hurt and said that nothing like this had happened in the 33 years he had owned Patrick’s Westport Grill.

He also said that the waitress had made the note on the receipt because she could not remember her table numbers.

“I’m very saddened by this whole situation,” he said. “I got word of it on Saturday around 11 o’clock. My night was gone; there was no more sleeping.”

But Wilson isn’t buying the idea that the waitress could not distinguish the table numbers.

“We were the very first table,” she said. “If you walked into Patrick’s, you would have walked into us.” She went on to point out that there were several other options, including describing what they were wearing rather than what race they were.

Hanon offered Wilson free food and drinks if she should ever change her mind and decide to come back to the eatery.
