On Sunday, a mother and her five children were rescued from a burning building by Brooklyn firefighters.

According to the fire department, twelve units responded to the fire in the three-story building. The mother and her children were on the third floor.

Stephanie Abney, 36, said that she lived right next to the apartment that caught fire.

“I heard screaming,” she said. “The Fire Department had to break them (window bars) to get them out. Luckily, we’re OK. Material things can be replaced, but not lives.”

The family was taken to the hospital, and one person is in serious condition.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
