Janay Rice gets 'pissed' when people call husband Ray a 'wife beater'

Janay Rice appeared on Outside of the Lines, speaking with ESPN’s Jemele Hill to say that she gets angry when people call her husband, Ray Rice, a “wife beater.”

“It pissed me off,” Janay said. “I get angry about it because it’s the furthest thing from the truth.”

She went on to explain that the now infamous incident in February 2014 was the first and only time Rice had never once put his hands on her.

“It has never happened before, and that’s not him,” she told ESPN. “He’s been made out to be this monster, and he’s not a wife beater. He’s someone who made a mistake. He’s human.”

Janay added that while she is “not taking the light off of anything that he did,” she gets mad because “he has done everything he’s supposed to do to redeem himself.”

“That I’m with Ray for all of the wrong reasons, or that I stayed with him for the wrong reasons,” Janay replied to Hill’s question about the biggest misconceptions about her. “One thing that I’ve heard a lot is, ‘Why did she stay? Is it because of the money? Is it because of who he is?’ That’s the biggest misconception. A lot of people assume that I’m with Ray for what he can do for me. But anybody who knows me knows that I don’t need Ray. I’m with him because I love him, and he just happens to be a football player.”
