A Memphis teen who lost his mother a month before heading to Stanford is getting a second chance thanks to the kindness of strangers.

Dellarontay Readus’sĀ mother died afterĀ battling heart and stomach issues, just weeks before her son was scheduled to start his freshman year at college. The family initially had trouble raising the funds to even pay for her funeral. However, thanks to generousĀ donations made through aĀ GoFundMeĀ fundraiser, they were able to not only cover the funeral arrangements but also make a significant dent inĀ Readus’s college expenses.

Even though they only asked for $2,000, they ultimately ended up raising $28,0000.

ā€œBasically it all comes down to the fact that weā€™re poor, and we donā€™t have anything,ā€ Readus toldĀ WREG. ā€œWe didnā€™t have anything our whole lives, and we still donā€™t have anything right now.ā€

ā€œI hope sheā€™s looking down on me, and sheā€™s able to see everything Iā€™m doing,ā€ Readus cried. ā€œI hope sheā€™s able to see all the good work Iā€™m going to put in this world.ā€
