According to police sources, an NYPD sergeant who was accused of raping a 15-year-old girl he met on the internet killed himself on Thursday by asphyxiating himself with a plastic bag.

“Tell my family I love them,” Joel Doseau wrote in a suicide note, according to a police source with knowledge of the investigation.

Doseau was having financial troubles as well as legal troubles, as his house was being foreclosed on at the time he was served with a 40-count indictment in which he was charged with multiple counts of rape. The full charges included seven counts of rape, five counts of promoting the sexual performance of a child, 11 counts of sexual abuse and misconduct and three counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child.

The charges stemmed from an ongoing relationship that Doseau had with a woman who is now in her 20s but who at the time the relationship started was only 15 and below the legal age of consent in 2008.

According to court papers, Doseau met the girl online and lied about his age. She believed him and began to send him nude pictures of herself, and the relationship progressed from talking, texting and pictures to a sexual relationship.

Doseau faced up to 15 years in prison on the top charge.
