Last weekend, a family claims they were subjected to a hate crime while they were vacationing at Rollins Lake in Nevada County.

Everything started out fine at the family camping trip. “Have fun on the lake, we pitched the tents, we bring the food, we cook the ribs,” Kanisha Allen recalled.

But then another family came to the campsite next to theirs on Friday, and things went downhill. “Some of the other campers from the rowdier group were just staring over and making racial comments,” she said. Although the family tried to ignore the behavior, one man in the group began to shout hateful things at them by the next day.

“I didn’t come here to sleep next to any F-ing Ns, (is what he said),”Allen recalled.

When the family spoke to campsite employees, however, the man then threatened the camp employees and became even angrier.

“Whatever was said infuriated the main aggressor of the group, and all you hear is him saying the ‘n’ word, ‘I’m going to kill you F-ing Ns,'” Allen said.

The man began to run towards them holding what later turned out to be a shovel but what in the dark looked like a shotgun.

“It was terrifying, I have a 9-month-old daughter, and I grabbed her and the only thing that I could think of was you need to go down the ravine and hide next to the water because we didn’t know what was happening,” Allen said.

Allen’s mother, who is in her 60s, fell as she was running away and cut and bruised her face as she did so.

“(My mother was alive during the Civil Rights movement and) to have to relive some of the things that she had gone through in her younger years today, it is almost unbelievable,” Allen said.

After that, they called the police, and the man tried to run away when he heard sirens approaching. But since no weapons were found on him, he was not arrested. However, the investigation is still ongoing, and the DA’s office may still press charges.
