LeBron James to help Akron parents get GED
LeBron James announced that parents of the kids in his program will get a chance to complete their GED.
Following on the heels of last month’s announcement that he would be teaming up with the University of Akron to sponsor 1,100 scholarships for kids in his I Promise program, LeBron James announced that parents of the kids in the program would also get a chance to pursue their education dreams and complete their GED.
According to Cleveland.com, James teamed up with Project Learn of Summit County to ensure the parents in the program will be eligible to “receive financial and emotional support to obtain high school equivalency credentials and learn other life skills.”
Some incentives for the adults in the program include Hewlett-Packard laptops they can keep if they finish the classes and a letter from James himself.
So far, the program, which will be called “I Promise, Too,” includes nine adults who will be receiving their education from Project Learn.
Executive director of the LeBron James Family Foundation Michele Campbell said in a news release obtained by Cleveland.com:
We are so excited about the I PROMISE, Too program because a huge part of our foundation’s work (with children) centers around parent involvement. This is an opportunity to help our parents make strides in their own academic careers so they are better equipped to help our students keep their educational promises. We can’t reach our students without their parents’ support, so this program is monumental for our families and their futures.
