Police have arrested a Texas man after finding that he vandalized his own truck and then blamed the damage on Black Lives Matter supporters.

45-year-old Scott Lattin was charged with making a false report and later admitted that he had damaged the vehicle for “insurance purposes.”

Lattin had originally claimed that his vehicle was vandalized because he had decorated it with the phrase “Police Lives Matter” in support of Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth, who was shot and killed in a gas station last month and whose death has been connected with the Black Lives Matter movement by conservatives without any real evidence linking them. Lattin claimed that his vehicle had been spray-painted with the phrases “Black Lives Matter” and “F*** the police.”

Lattin raised $6,000 in money from supporters before his fraud was discovered in an attempt to supposedly pay for repairs.

Whitney Police Chief Chris Bentley noted that Lattin’s original statement did not include any details of damage to the interior of the car, but later news reports showed that Lattin claimed that the seats had been slashed and the glove compartment ripped open.

“We have so many groups that have participated and come to Whitney, Texas of all places to help these people,” Bentley said. “And for them to have been deceived? It’s just wrong.”
