A man saw a spider while he was at a gas station and decided to try to kill it using his lighter. The combination of flames and gas, predictably, got a bit out of hand.

According to Fox Detroit, the fire was caught on camera as it engulfed the man’s gas pump and slightly damaged his car. Remarkably, he was able to escape harm himself, and an employee at the station, Susan Adams, reacted quickly and calmly by hitting the automatic stop button for the gas.

Before the firefighters arrived, the man grabbed a fire extinguisher. He later admitted to the firefighters what had happened, saying that he was deathly afraid of spiders and reacted to the situation.

Although the damage was contained and only the single gas pump was destroyed, the man came back to the station the next day to apologize profusely.

“He was sorry,” Susan said. “He was sorry, he said he didn’t know. It is just one of those things that happen – stupidity.”
