California mother finds shackled ‘slave’ figure in toy pirate ship

A Sacramento woman was furious after she discovered her 5-year-old had been playing with a pirate ship toy that included a dark-skinned figurine with a slave collar around its neck.

Ida Lockett says she was assembling the Playmobil pirate ship that her son received for his birthday when she found a toy that appeared to be a black person with no shoes, tattered-looking clothes and a slave collar around its neck. The ship also has a built-in dungeon where the slave could be kept.

“It’s definitely racist,” Lockett told CB13. “It told my son to put a slave cuff around the black character’s neck, and then to play with the toy.”

“This is deplorable; this cannot be accepted, and it needs to be pulled off the shelf,” Sacramento NAACP president Stephen Webb told the news station.

Neither Playmobil or the Toys R Us where the item was purchased would respond to the station’s attempt to get a comment.
