Amos Newsome, an Alabama city commissioner, was arrested and is now facing third-degree assault charges after he attacked a local reporter who confronted him about a voter fraud scandal.

The reporter, Ken Curtis, approached Newsome to ask about the investigation into four people for fraud in connection with his most recent election. After Newsome tried to dodge the questions and even pushed the microphone away, Newsome told the reporter to “git” and grabbed his face.

WTVY Vice President and General Manager Spencer Bienvenu announced their intention to pursue legal action against Newsome after Curtis suffered a swollen eye and a scratch on his face.

“We understand that holding political office can be stressful, but that never warrants unwanted physical contact, let alone an open, public assault,” Bienvenu said. “Our employee was attacked in the course of doing their job, which they are entitled to do without the fear of physical violence.”
