Florida school asks kids to choose between ‘a black guy’ or ‘a Hispanic woman’ in racist ‘lifeboat quiz'

A Florida mother was absolutely furious when her child came home from school after taking a quiz that she says is both inappropriate for children and racist.

The quiz asked children to choose who they would save in a hypothetical sea disaster. There are 15 people on the list but only 9 spots in the lifeboat, and the children are asked to choose between options such as “the black guy,” “the Hispanic woman,” and “the pregnant woman.” The list even includes names like President Barack Obama, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, and singer Justin Bieber.

According to the mother, Valerie Kennel, one of the students became so upset by the quiz that he tore up his paper, and the teacher then reprimanded him for his actions.

“It’s racist in every form,” Kennel said. She added, “This has nothing to do with history, nothing to do with it, and what is it teaching them?”

The school has since said that the quiz was intended as a method of building skills of cooperation as well as team-building and was not meant to be racist but to engender discussions in the classroom.

“This school has a culturally diverse population,” the Hillsborough County School District said in a statement. “The test brought up good debates on how to work together, building relationships.”
