Michael A. Jones, 44, has been arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery and child abuse after officers responded to a domestic violence call at his residence

Initially, it was only believed that Jones had shot his wife, Heather. However, authorities later received a tip to also check his property for the remains of his seven-year-old son, who had been missing for several months.

Investigators eventually found human remains near a barn on the premises. Jones lived with his wife and eight children ranging in ages from 1 to 11 in Piper, a rural area near Kansas City. Following the discovery, his charges were upgraded to “torturing or cruelly beating” his missing son.

According to the Kansas City Star, the children were home-schooled and all lived in squalor.

“Their house was horrible,” an anonymous source told WSFA. ‘Their house was just filthy. The kids lived in filth. Trash everywhere. Dried food all over the house.”

Former babysitters and caretakers say they have reported the Jones family to child services and are amongst those who believe the missing young boy’s remains were fed to the swine on their land.

“For all those girls to have to witness what their brother went through and to carry the burden that something happened to their brother is horrible,” said one former babysitter.

“There are bullet holes in the walls of that house,” admitted Jones’ brother-in-law. “So I’m sure you can understand what terror may have been going through that household daily.”

Jones, who also happens to be the owner of a bail bonding business, is now being held at the Wyandotte County Jail on a bond of $10 million.
