A homeless man in San Diego was arrested while he was sleeping in his tiny house, donated by the community.
A homeless man in San Diego was arrested while he was sleeping in his tiny house, donated by the community.
Lisa Kogan had seen a YouTube video about a Los Angeles man who built tiny homes for the homeless and decided that she wanted to try that as well. “I became inspired and I got my friends behind and donated money,” Kogan said. “We built it last month. It’s a little house, its moveable, it has wheels.”
After she built the house, it was just a matter of finding the perfect occupant, and a man known as “Red,” real name Michael Clark, seemed like the perfect candidate. He worked as a deacon at International Love Ministries of God church, and he was known as a good guy.
On Saturday, Kogan presented Red with his new house, but then the police stepped in.
“So, Red’s place ended up right here on the sidewalk, and so this is where he was sleeping when the police came,” Kogan said. “Had they written him a ticket and asked him to move the house he could have had plenty of help. There was no discussion of a ticket. It was immediate handcuffs.”
“I’m outraged. When I heard the news I cried and I was upset,” Kogan said. “If you look all around the street, there’s tents, and I don’t understand why he was singled out when his house was right here on the sidewalk. And you can look down the street and across the street and there’s tents everywhere.”
