A Mississippi RV park owner acknowledge that he asked an interracial couple to leave because of the color of their skin.

Erica Flores Dunahoo, who is Hispanic and Native American, and her husband, a National Guardsman who is African-American, were surprised when they were told they were being evicted from the park. “Me and my husband, not ever in 10 years have we experienced any problem,” Dunahoo said. “Nobody’s given us dirty looks. This is our first time.”

The park owner, Gene Baker, acknowledged that he evicted the couple and said that he had only done it because “the neighbors were giving me such a problem.”

Dunahoo said that Baker had been “nice” when she first gave him a check for rent for the month, but that changed when Baker found out about her husband. “Hey, you didn’t tell me you was married to no black man,” he said.

When she said that she had not known that was a problem, he went on, “Oh, it’s a big problem with the members of my church, my community and my mother-in-law. They don’t allow that black and white shacking.”

In the face of such discrimination, the NAACP is investigating the situation.

“Racial discrimination should be a thing of the past in Mississippi, considering our long history,” said Derrick Johnson, president of the Mississippi NAACP, adding that in the current political climate of ignorance, “we can do no more than expect incidents like this to exist in the state of Mississippi.”
