The Birth of a Nation Trailer will blow your mind

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

On Friday, the studio released the very first trailer for writer/director/star Nate Parker’s movie about Nat Turner’s 1831 slave rebellion.

The very first glances of the movie are set to Nina Simone’s cover of “Strange Fruit” and feature a montage of indignities and atrocities inflicted on the slaves of the South, before transferring to another tune — and a fresh expectation for independence, with it.

The 2016 Sundance Festival has been a great year for film premieres and deals. Both of the top prizes at the festival, the Dramatic Grand Jury and the Dramatic Audience Award, went to “Birth of a Nation.” Fox Spotlight had already picked up distribution rights for the film. They paid $17.5 million for Nate Parker’s slave-revolt drama, making it the biggest deal in Sundance history. “Morris of America” was the only other film to win two awards, taking prizes for Screenwriting and Acting.
