Cop buys car seat for man’s 3-year-old daughter instead of writing a ticket

A Michigan man got a great surprise when the police officer who pulled him over decided not to write him a ticket and help him in a time of need.

Officer Joshua Scaglione pulled over Lavante Dell because of his non-reflective windows, but during the stop noticed a 3-year-old girl in the backseat without a car seat.

“So I took him out of the car, separated him from his family and asked him what’s going on. He’s like, ‘Bills are building up, overtaking my income and I can’t afford a car seat right now,’” the officer told WJBK.

Then, Dell said, the officer did something unexpected: “He looked around and said ‘Can you follow me to Walmart?’”

Scaglione took the father to Walmart and purchased a car seat with his own money.  Dell says he was so overwhelmed he didn’t think to get the officer’s name. He went to Facebook to share the story and ask for help tracking the officer down.

“If you would have seen us in Walmart u would have thought we were best friends,” Dell wrote in a Facebook post. “I’ve been calling all day trying to get his name because I was so in shock I didn’t even look at his name tag.”

Eventually, the Westland Police Department looked into the story and discovered that it was Scaglione, though the rookie cop didn’t want to receive undue praise or attention for his actions.

“I’m just doing my job,” Scaglione told Dell. “What good would giving you a ticket do besides putting you further in the hole, making it harder on you to come up?”
