Prince offered to mentor Chris Brown after Rihanna incident

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

This week, Rolling Stone brought back a 2014 interview with Prince as part of a tribute to the late entertainer. During the interview, Prince spoke with contributor Brian Hiatt about everything from the death of Michael Jackson to the fact that he had offered to mentor Chris Brown.

Prince apparently made the offer shortly after the incident in which Brown left then-girlfriend Rihanna battered and bruised.

“I don’t want to talk about it. I’m too close to it,” Prince said in reference to a question about Michael Jackson before he paused and went on. “He is just one of many who have gone through that door—Amy Winehouse and folks. We’re all connected, right, we’re all brothers and sisters, and the minute we lock that in, we wouldn’t let anybody in our family fall. That’s why I called Chris Brown. All of us need to be able to reach out and just fix stuff. There’s nothing that’s unforgivable.”

When Hiatt pressed him on that point, asking about Brown’s actions and if they were “unforgivable,” Prince said, “Unforgivable. Goodness. That’s when we go check the master, Christ. … Have you ever instantly forgiven somebody? It’s the best feeling in the world, and it totally dismantles that person’s whole stance.”
