Coach under investigation after fighting 15-year-old passes out from chokehold

An investigation is underway into the use of a choke hold by a South Carolina coach after a 15-year-old girl went unconscious in his arms.

Two female students at Kingstree Senior High School were reportedly fighting when Coach Mack Henry Burgess stepped in to try to break up the fight. According to an incident report filed by the mother of one girl involved in the fight, while breaking up the altercation, Burgess held the girl  “so tightly that the juvenile lost consciousness and went limp.”

“My daughter was in a choke hold to the point where her feet were off the ground and she was reaching for her neck for them to turn her loose,” mother Yalonda Nesmith said.

While police determined that there was probable cause to arrest Burgess, a Williamsburg County magistrate judge decided instead to issue a courtesy summons so that there will be a hearing to hear both sides of the story.

The Williamsburg County School District released this statement concerning the incident:

“We have several programs in place to assist our students in resolving conflicts without physical contact. Our Rehabilitative Behavioral Health Specialists, Intervention Specialists, Mental Health Counselors (on-site), and Guidance Counselors work closely with students to address numerous issues throughout the year to include conflict resolution.

Annually, counselors and administrators participate in Crisis Non-violence Technique Training that provides them with the knowledge needed during physical altercations.

The district is investigating this incident and working cooperatively with local authorities.”
