Paula Patton discusses dating post-Robin Thicke: ‘I have no idea what I’m doing’

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Paula Patton says dating again is scary, but after her 10-year marriage to Robin Thicke ended last year, she’s finally ready to give love a try again.

“It’s been fun and interesting and I’ve learned a lot about myself and a lot about a lot of other people and what I like and don’t like,” she told Essence Live host Dana Blair.

She went on to say that she was taking things slow, because the whole experience was still new to her: “I haven’t been doing too much of it, it’s kind of strange. Listen, Robin and I, we… I met him when I was 15 years old, and I have no idea what I’m doing. But it’s exciting; it’s so fun. I’m having a blast.”

But after all her years in a relationship, Patton does know what she’s looking for in a man.

“You know what the biggest thing is for me? Somebody who really likes to have fun,” said Patton. I want a man, but I want a man that also wants to embrace his inner child. You know? Laugh. Have fun. Enjoy the moment….I just, I want to be happy. Life is too short.”

But, she added, her new dating adventure isn’t just about the next man in her life. It’s about figuring out who she is and finding herself.

“It’s really nice, honestly, getting used to being alone,” she said. “It’s freeing. It’s scary at the beginning. It’s really scary.  But it’s something I’m coming to embrace, knowing that that’s really what it is now – learning to love yourself, enjoying your time with your friends and family, and then it will sort itself out. But I gotta figure all that out I think first. I have to learn that.”
