According to the Chicago Tribune, over the weekend in Chicago, 8 people were killed and 35 were wounded as the city passed another violent milestone: over 3,000 people have been shot this year.

As of early Monday, 3,028 had been shot, which is more than the number of people shot in the entire year of 2015. What’s more, this grisly milestone is the second in as many weeks for the city of Chicago, which passed 500 homicides last week, with only 481 in all of 2015.

The violence is concentrated, with just three districts in the South Side making up one third of the violence for the city. Of the districts, Harrison was the worst, with 423 people shot. Englewood, in the South Side also saw 324 people shot so far this year.

As for why the violence has been increasing, police say that the increased flow of illegal firearms is just adding fuel to the fire of a gang problem that has long plagued the city. While the gangs there were once structured, they have become fractured recently, leading to more violence that is only fueled by social media, which allows gang members to taunt each other.

Police are also claiming that increased scrutiny is contributing to the rise in violence, as they claim that they are reluctant to use more force in the wake of the rise of recorded police interactions.
