According to a Michigan mother, her seventh grade son was suspended from school for doing the right thing and reporting a knife.

Kyler Davies had bought his backpack from Goodwill and didn’t know that there was a pocketknife in the bag. When he did find the knife, he immediately reported it to a counselor, but he was suspended for his actions.

“He was turning it over like he was supposed to, and you are punishing him for doing what’s right. So what it that teaching these kids?” asked his mother, Denise Davies.

According to Davies, the incident meant an automatic suspension for a year, though it was cut down to 30 days. The school also tried to keep him from playing football at the Coldwater Rocket Football program, preventing him from riding the buses with the team, as they belong to the school district. However, the football program refused to kick him off the team.

“I understand the violence stuff that’s going on in schools, I said but when you get some boys that are honest and turns it in — he wasn’t trying to hide it — and then he’s getting punished for it,” Davies said.
