A pregnant 19-year-old woman was killed in a drive-by shooting in Chicago. The father of her child was also wounded but not killed, but the baby survived the shooting.

Parasha Beard was shot in the neck on Sunday night, and after the shooting, doctors delivered the child at the hospital. Her family named her “Miracle.” According to the medical staff, little Miracle weighed only two pounds and was born extremely prematurely, as Beard was due in December.

“It is a miracle,” said Beard’s grandmother, Sylvia Ann Jones. “Hopefully, she’ll pull through. By the grace of God, she’ll pull through.”

At the time of the shooting, Beard was sitting in a parked car with the baby’s father, who is a documented gang member. Both Beard and the child’s father were hit in the drive-by shooting and rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. According to Chicago police spokesman Officer Kevin Quad, the child’s father was hit in the chest and neck but stabilized. Beard died about an hour after being rushed to the hospital.

“They came and ended her life in broad daylight,” Beard’s mother Crystal Jones told the Chicago Tribune. “They shot her up in front of my house in broad daylight. I just want justice and peace.”
