Sterling K. Brown won his first Emmy award Sunday for portraying lawyer Christopher Darden in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and gave an acceptance speech for the books.

“I was talking to Melania Trump this morning and I was asking her, ‘What should I do, what should I say?’” he said with perfect shade, then got serious.

“A lot of you may not have known who I was, but you checked the box anyway… To the communities that have supported me up to this point in my career, there’s a lot of people in St. Louis making a lot of noise right now. Mama, I can hear you. I love you,” Brown said.

To his wife and fellow actress Ryan Michelle Bathe, he added, “I got the hottest chick in the game rocking my chain.”

Brown received a standing ovation from the Emmy audience, but it was just a sign of great things to come.

The veteran actor and Stanford graduate is also starring in NBC’s highly-anticipated drama This Is Us. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show earned big ratings when it premiered last night, averaging nearly 10 million viewers.

Brown plays Randall, a happily-married, highly successful businessman looking for the birth father who abandoned him as a baby.

“I’ve been without my own father for about 30 years, he passed away when I was a young man,” says Brown. “So there’s something I can connect to in a very earnest way with wanting to have him be present.”

The first episode of This Is Us had a twist ending that left a lot of fans shocked and wanting more.
