A United Airlines passenger was kicked off a plan because she was wearing a superhero hat featuring the Marvel hero the Black Panther.

Freelance e-sports journalist Amanda Stevens shared a picture of her outfit, which included a tee shirt with an upside-down American flag in addition to the Black Panther hat, as she reported that she had been told that the pilot was uncomfortable with her clothes.

She first began to have problems as she was preparing to board the flight, and although she had flown in the same outfit before, she turned the shirt inside out before she was then told that her baseball cap with the Marvel superhero was problematic as well.

She was allowed to board but then had a short exchange with a flight attendant who asked her to place her bag under her seat.

“I didn’t know if I was going to be staying on the plane or not and I said that,” she said. “I was grumbling because I was frustrated.”

She was then kicked off the flight, with the conversation with the flight attendant cited as the reason.

United has since responded to the story, though they bizarrely misidentified her:

“We have reached out to Ms. Campos to discuss her concerns. Our goal is to provide safe and comfortable travel for all of our customers and we regret that Ms. Campos was unhappy with the handling of the seat assignments on her flight. United holds our employees to the highest standards of professionalism and has zero tolerance for discrimination.”
