Brother and sister fatally shot by intruders while parents out for the night

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Early Saturday morning in Jonesboro, Georgia, a 15-year-old boy and his 11-year-old sister were shot dead in their home while their parents were out.

Daveon and Tatiyana Coates were home with several other children when there was a home invasion at about 5 am. At that time, an unidentified number of people broke in and attacked the children before fleeing.

None of the other children were harmed in the incident. It was one of those children who made the phone call to 911.

Clayton County Police Chief Michael Register has called the invasion tragic.

“It’s very tragic. It’s senseless,” Register stated.

“Not only in the Atlanta area, in the country we have to do something about violence.”

The family has only lived in the home for two or three months; before that, it sat vacant for two years.

Neighbor Joy Shilengay is surprised at the violent attack on two children.

“I’ve been living here for three years and nothing like this has ever happened,” she said.

“But in this day and age, anything is possible. People don’t care.”

Police are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting as well as if anything is missing from the home. The suspects remain at large.
