107-year-old woman excited to vote for Hillary in 2016 election

Donella Wilson is one of South Carolina’s oldest voters, and she is looking forward to voting for president for the thirteenth time.

“I never thought that I will live to see a day like this, I’m over 100 years old,” she said.

Wilson first cast a vote in the 1940s for Franklin D. Roosevelt, and now, she is casting her vote not only for herself but those that came before her, especially her parents, both of whom were slaves in Calhoun County.

“We couldn’t spell vote. We didn’t know what the word meant other that we had an opportunity to say something and cast a vote, praying as we go along that the vote could count to help us as a Negro race,” she recalled.

Although Wilson lived through times when both her race and her gender kept her from being able to vote, now, she has been sure to exercise her right to vote at every opportunity, never missing an election.

This year, Wilson hopes that she will be able to see history being made once more, as she plans to cast her vote for Hillary Clinton.

“I’m looking for her to be our first female President,” Wilson said. “I think it’s an honor, a precious gift from God.”
