The color itself has many meanings. It is rare enough that it has long been associated with nobility as well as the supernatural, but it can also be the color associated with mourning.

But perhaps more importantly, it is the color you get when you mix red and blue, the two colors associated with the Democratic and Republican parties, meaning Clinton’s clothing was a symbolic rejoinder to her words of reconciliation and cooperation as she called for a healing of our divided nation.

“Our nation is more deeply divided than we thought,” she said in her speech before she called for healing and togetherness.
